After twenty years teaching middle school and high school students in the public school system in New York, social studies teacher Eric Bronson is offered early retirement.
A former colleague points him to a unique opportunity at an all-girls school in Wyoming. This school, for girls in grades seven through twelve, is different from the others in one respect; it admits transgendered girls in addition to genetic girls who are troubled. His new job not only gives him new experiences, but also a deeper appreciation for teaching and life.
