Barbara took Evelyn under her care, leading the sobbing child to the schoolroom where she had him sit in the straight back chair.
"I suppose that this afternoon you started your lessons with Betty learning how to do the household laundry," Barbara noted casually as he composed himself. Glancing towards the instructional chart stand before she sat down in a large comfortable easy chair, in contrast to the child's formal seating.
"While she will focus on how to take care of the general household laundry I shall teach you about personal clothes care, which shall serve as a sort of bridge between our fashion instruction and her teaching, I suppose."
She smiled seeing his look of intense childlike interest.
"I will teach you how to build a basic wardrobe, how to look for quality and practicality as well as cost consciousness, and how to care for and maintain that wardrobe once you have it."
She arose to open the chart with a laugh, "I suppose with eight ladies about the house you will have a great deal of practice learning about both how to be a laundress and a ladies maid. When you are finished in this little finishing school you will be an absolute jewel."
