"Honey," he said, "you forgot to leave the pajamas on the door. All I found was a nightgown."
She stood up and walked over to him until she was only a few feet away. "Honey," she replied, "I didn't forget anything. The nightgown is for you...Jessica!"
Jesse stood there as if struck by lightning. He felt as if his head was about to explode. He barely managed to hasp. "Wh... wh... what did you call me?"
"Jessica, Jessica,... Jessica!" she repeated. "I know all about it," she continued, "your mother told me the whole story!"
His mother! She had betrayed him! Jesse felt his world fall apart. He had to sit down on the edge of the bed, and clutched the nightgown in front of him like a shield.
"How... how did that happen?" he managed to choke out.
Alicia sat down beside him, and put her arm about his bare shoulder.
"I recognized you immediately at the restaurant," she said. "I didn't know what was going on, so I tried to hide it, but to tell you the truth, I nearly fainted when I came up to your table and realized it was you with your mother instead of the pretty girl you seemed to be from the other side of the restaurant."
